Administering eye drops, eye ointments and eye gels

Course overview

Administering eye drops, gels and ointments requires hands-on practise. We have been teaching people to administer preparations to the eye for over 20 years and will teach a more gentle (person-centred) technique than traditional methods. Class size is limited to 12 as we require all delegates to practise and demonstrate competence.

  • Explain when gloves are needed vs hand washing
  • Demonstrate what checks to make against the medicines administration record (MAR)
  • Demonstrate how to carry out a full medicines cross check
  • Explain what type of consent is needed
  • Explain and demonstrate what expiry date checks are needed
  • Demonstrate how to administer the following items in a person-centred way with appropriate regard to infection control measures:
  • Eye drops
  • Eye ointments
  • Eye gels
  • Demonstrate how to record the administration on an MAR
