This course will teach you how to put in place sensible (and achievable!) controls when managing and administering controlled drugs in the community. Included in this course is our standard operating procedure for managing controlled drugs in community settings. During the course we can discuss the controls we put in place and tailor this to your setting.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

      • Be aware of the legislation and best practice (or lack of!) that govern the management of controlled drugs
      • Describe why some medicines are classified as controlled drugs
      • Describe the different schedules of controlled drugs, and which CDs fit into which schedules
      • Demonstrate how to establish how to identify the schedule of a CD
      • Identify how to risk assess the controls needed for a CD
      • Explain why some settings may choose to use a witness (and who they can be)
      • Understand how to correctly receive, administer, dispose of, and balance check controlled drugs and how to record this
      • Understand the rules and recording requirements when a person self-medicates with a controlled drug
      • Demonstrate how to deal with stock discrepancies
      • Demonstrate how to correct recording errors in CD running balances
