This course provides the skills, knowledge, and the materials to assess staff competence to administer medicines.

You will practice assessing people administering various dosage forms, using direct observation against a set of structured competence assessment checklists.

Format:

  • An online Foundation Course to learn how to administer medicines systematically
  • Two 2-hour webinars to practice assessing using our competence checklists
  • A final online video-based module to assess your assessment skills.

Learners must complete this last module within 4 months. Refer to our assessors FAQs for more details.

Course content

  1. Describe the legal/best practice requirements for assessing staff competence
  2. Tailor the direct observation checklist to your own organisation
  3. Observe someone administering the following dosage forms and state if they are competent or not:
  4. Solid oral medicines (tablets, capsules etc.) from original packs
  5. Solid oral medicines (tablets, capsules etc.) from monitored dosage (blister) packs – optional additional content if needed
  6. Oral liquids
  7. Topical medicines (creams, ointments etc.)
  8. Inhalers
  9. Eye drops
