Course overview

Course last audited November 2024

There is often a lack of formal training around controlled drugs. Staff are often unclear which drugs the legal controls are applied to, and lack training regarding witnessing, recording, and safe storage requirements.

This course will teach you how to manage and administer controlled drugs in line with current legal requirements and national best practice (Controlled drugs: safe use and management, NICE guideline [NG46] April 2016).

The online version of this course contains interactive content throughout to test the learner’s understanding of how to manage and administer controlled drugs. The course uses virtual medicines rounds to teach and assess a learner’s ability to receive, administer, dispose of, and balance check controlled drugs whilst recording these transactions correctly in a Controlled Drugs Register.

We have also designed a new Controlled Drugs Register with the help and advice of two national care organisations. We can train staff to use this during this course.
