Most medication training just teaches theory
The problem with most medication training is that it fails to teach staff how to actually administer medicines. Instead, it focuses on theory: legislation, classification of medicines, routes into the body, and even how medicines work (difficult with over 70,000 medicines available!).
Perhaps this is why one study in UK care homes showed 7 out of 10 residents were exposed to at least one medication error.
Our practical training teaches people how to administer medicines
In our Foundation Courses staff practice administering tablets, capsules, oral liquids, creams, inhalers and eye drops (with videos for online courses). We teach and assess students using our competence checklist which has been developed using more than 20 years of research into why medication errors occur.

Foundation courses assess staff with simulated medicines rounds including errors which they must identify and avoid.
We send individual learner reports to managers and support staff who fail with a follow on Virtual Medicines Round.
When Hampshire County Council measured the impact of our training, they found a 36% reduction in administration errors.

JOHN GREENE bsc Pharmacy
MD and Pharmacist Trainer
John is lead trainer and owner of the Medication Training Company. John is a registered pharmacist with over 30 years’ experience. He was previously a visiting lecturer at the University of Brighton and Principal Pharmacist for Older People at Brighton and Hove City NHS PCT. During this time in the NHS, he worked with the city council to transform medicines support to social care across the city.
John has written and delivered over 50 courses in medicines management and administration including train the trainers courses. He supported more than 25 local authorities and hundreds of private care providers, consultancy, medication policy writing, audits and training. John has authored 5 books on the subject and is a recognised national expert in his field.

Hi! My name is Susie. I qualified as a pharmacist in 2008 from the Welsh School of Pharmacy. I joined The Medication Training Company in 2019 as a trainer, predominantly in the West Sussex area. I also work in the Shoreham office, developing and updating course content, working on medication policies and trying to understand how the coffee machine works.
I love delivering face to face training as it’s the perfect setting to engage with learners and promote discussion around the challenges they face and ways to overcome them. My favourite workshop to deliver is Managing Medication Errors as I am passionate about a culture change in the way we work with errors.
Prior to working with The Medication Training Company, I worked in community pharmacy as a pharmacist manager and tutor of pre-registration pharmacists.

I’m Dipen Shah, an experienced pharmacist and independent prescriber in care, social, and healthcare settings. I delivers high-level clinical training to care home staff, schools, and healthcare professionals. My expertise spans GP practice work, where I support chronic disease management, reviews, and give advice on complex medication regimes.
I work with national and local healthcare providers, offering professional support to over 200 care settings. My clinical background includes the provision of prescribing services, including the management of long-term conditions, sexual health and immunisation services.
My strong focus on education and clinical governance which ensures that care staff are fully trained to meet the needs of their patients, while my leadership in the pharmacy sector drives improvements in both healthcare delivery and patient care across the community.

My name is Neil, and I’m a registered children’s nurse and I’ve worked in the area of paediatric neurology, neurodisability, epilepsy and palliative care in multiple hospitals and care settings over many years.
I have a passion for teaching people clinical and care skills using my experiences to relate theory to practice. My role in the company is particularly relevant to the company’s more clinical courses. Our range of epilepsy courses include vagal nerve stimulation and rectal paraldehyde, asthma and allergy and enteral feeding.

Hello! I’m Sahima Ali, an experienced clinical pharmacist, with extensive experience in general practice, hospital and community pharmacy. I also teaches junior pharmacists and university students.
I manage long-term conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia. I also specialises in medication review for older adults, the frail, or those with polypharmacy needs (those taking multiple medicines).
I works within the Primary Care Network MDT care homes team, and have extensive teaching experience with nurses and social care staff through my training role with the Medication Training Company.

Hi I’m Nicki, I’ve been a registered nurse for many years and have worked in various different care settings, including hospital and community care as well as research nursing.
For most of my nursing career I worked in General Practice as a Practice Nurse and I specialised in Diabetes, delivering the diabetes clinics in the surgery.
I have been a trainer for more than eight years and enjoy delivering face to face and online training.

Hi, I’m Clair, I am a Physician Associate.
I graduated with a Masters in PA Studies in 2021 and have been working in General Practice on a part time basis, focussing on urgent care and
respiratory conditions. I have also worked in hospital settings, again mostly on respiratory wards, and also cardiology settings.
I also teach health and social care one day per week at a local sixth form college.
I’ve been a trainer with the Medication Training Company for over two years, and I really enjoy delivering training courses both face to face and online.
