This half-day webinar Foundation Course in Medicines Administration teaches learners how to safely prepare, select, administer and record medicines through a step-by-step process using a comprehensive competence checklist. The process has been designed following many years of research into why medication errors occur. It ensures medicines are given in a safe and systematic way, reducing the risk of mistakes caused by complacency.

The course is delivered through a blended-learning approach and includes access to our online course. Following the webinar, the skills learners have developed are assessed using our online Virtual Medication Round. Learners must also complete post-course knowledge assessments covering oral liquids, topical medicines, inhalers and eye drops.

This course has been shown to reduce medication errors by 36% in a study conducted by Hampshire County Council.

Course content

  1. Medication errors: why we need to work systematically
  2. An overview of how to give medicines systematically
  3. Simulated medicines round no. 1 (pre-learning competence assessment)
  4. Infection control, gloves, hand hygiene
  5. Prepare equipment and a drink
  6. Check medicines records: MAR, medicines care plans, PRN protocols, body maps etc.
  7. ‘Start with the chart’: checks needed on the MAR (video demonstration, practical activity)
  8. Breakdown of a pharmacy label
  9. Expiry and once opened dates
  10. The meds cross check – 7 rights ‘touch the words’
  11. Simulated medicines rounds 2 and 3 (competence assessment)
  12. Cautionary and advisory labels
  13. Dispense the medicine: ‘pop and dot’
  14. Count your doses vs MAR
  15. Administer in a person centred way
  16. Recording on an MAR
  17. Administering oral liquids systematically – (including video demonstrations)
  18. Applying topical medication to the skin systematically –(including video demonstrations)
  19. Administering inhalers systematically – (including video demonstrations)
  20. Administering eye drops systematically – (including video demonstrations)

All learners receive a comprehensive online workbook teaching:

  1. Administering medicines in a systematic way to avoid errors
  2. Infection control issues/when are gloves needed?
  3. Preparation of equipment and a drink
  4. Medicines paperwork (care plans, PRN protocols, body maps etc.)
  5. Checking the client’s identity
  6. Pain assessment scales
  7. The checks needed on the medicines chart
  8. Breakdown of a pharmacy label
  9. Expiry and period after opening dates
  10. Checking original packs: the 7-point medicines cross check
  11. Checking MDS (blister) packs
  12. Cautionary and advisory labels
  13. ‘Pop and dot’ and preparing for administration
  14. Administering in a person-centred way
  15. Consent
  16. Coding the medicines administration record
  17. Crushing or splitting tablets

Accreditation

This course is accredited by CPD Assessed.

Certification

Foundation Course certificates are valid for 2 years from the date of completion (click here to read more).

After expiry, learners must complete a paid refresher course to remain certified.
