Supporting Pupils with Asthma

Course Overview

This course teaches staff how to support school children with diabetes

Duration

3.5 hours

Aimed at

School nurses, teachers, teaching assistants, admin officers who have a role supporting pupils at school with medical conditions

Certification

One year (in line with CQC/NICE recommendations)

Format

We use a combination of distance learning (to teach the knowledge) plus a face-to-face workshop to teach the practical skills required and assess competency.

Assessment

There are written tests that you will take to test your knowledge of the theory (after reading the workbook). There are practical tests of competency that you will undertake on the face-to-face workshop.

Each learner will be provided with a comprehensive workbook covering:

  • Individual healthcare plans (IHP) for diabetes
  • The role of glucose and insulin
  • The causes of hyperglycaemia
  • Symptoms of hyperglycaemia
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Treating hyperglycaemia according to the pupils IHP
  • The causes of hypoglycaemia
  • Symptoms of hypoglycaemia
  • Treating hypoglycaemia according to the pupils IHP
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Supporting pupils with their insulin at school
  • Supporting pupils with insulin pumps at school
  • Sports and PE for school children with diabetes
Practical Workshop (click to expand)

On the face-to-face practical workshop you will learn the skills and competencies required, namely:

  • Working from Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for pupils with diabetes
  • The role and support from the childrens’ diabetes nurse specialists
  • The role of insulin and glucose
  • Blood sugar monitoring (practical)
  • Hyperglycaemia – causes, symptoms, treatment
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Hypoglycaemia – causes, symptoms, treatment
